This proposed unit is two-fold: Firstly it is designed to act as the quality assurance unit that ensures that services FAFU is offering to its children are of standard for the furtherance of the welfare of the children.Secondly the unit is to help in gathering data on issues involving children within the slum community aimed at highlighting the plight of Kibera children with a view to bring positive changes that promote children welfare. A room within FAFU has been constructed for this purpose.
Purpose: Promoting Children Welfare both at FAFU and in the slum.
Strategy: Establishing child welfare & Research Unit
Rationale: There is no government mechanism to highlight or document children matters in the slum. Neither journalistic research of the same. As a result cases of children neglect and abuse are never highlighted.
- This therefore will be the coordinating unit tasked to improve and maintain FAFU children welfare matters (trauma management and quality assurance unit) as well as establishing slum child research unit in line with the current FAFU strategic plan, objective 9 as well as promoting achievement of objectives 6, 7 & 8. (Objective 6: To develop and strengthen networks and linkages for development of slum children by increasing the capacity of at least 100 child care centers in Kibera by 2020..
Objective 7: To create conducive environment for child development initiatives by organizing one forum every year of stakeholders and authorities to create awareness by propagating children’s issues.
Objective 8: To create and strengthen referral systems and relevant networks for effective delivery of direct services to children with urgent needs.
Objective 9: To conduct research and document information on issues affecting slum children for easy access by stakeholders)
- Documenting regularity negative issues affecting children in the slum and positive efforts requiring support. The unit is to create hotline desk to record cases of children abuse and neglect. The unit is to collaborate with the government’s local children department for referral and intervention purposes.
- The unit is to produce quarterly update on emerging children issues in Kibera slum and current positive efforts. This is followed by mid-year newsletter and annual magazine for advocacy purpose. The magazines and newsletters are to be supplied to government relevant organs, children welfare organizations and individuals with interests at a fee to maintain the program.
We are helping the children to top their talent.
